Frequently Asked Questions

  • The YMKT guides are a free gift to you that focus on one or two concepts and are a way for you to see what my guides are like.  The Five Essential guides are pretty much the same, but with more concepts.  Get both and you have a great foundation for each unit.

  • Both!  These will help lay a great foundation if you’re first learning a unit.  If you’re at the end of the year and reviewing for the AP exam, these are the core concepts that everything else builds upon.  Know these essentials well and you’ll be in a great position to succeed.

  • These guides are chock full of free response questions (FRQs) that utilize the same task verbs that are on the AP exam, so they are great practice. Open-ended questions like this require students to recall their knowledge and understanding, not just recognize it, which is the best form of self-quizzing (a research-proven form of studying). I include detailed keys.

  • No. Some students want more practice with multiple choice questions (MCQs). While a bit of coaching and practice can be helpful (we can do this in a tutoring session), there are better ways to train your brain. Students who struggle with MCQs tend to not know their content well enough. MCQ practice is an “easier” form of review because it requires recognition not recall. On the other hand, FRQs require recalling the information from your brain, not recognizing the correct answer. Which training do you think makes your memory stronger?

  • Instead of trying to give a bit of information about a lot of concepts, I’ve gone for depth on the most important concepts. These are the ones that are the foundation for everything else. Know these essentials well! I tie the practice questions directly to the content explanations, which forces active learning.

  • I have spent thousands of hours tutoring AP Human Geography students from all over the world. They’ve used different textbooks, had different teachers, and of course had different life experiences. I’ve learned what trips students up. I’ve figured out what is unclear in this course. The creators of other materials may be experts in geography, very good teachers, and/or video creation masters. But that doesn’t mean they know what confuses students or what students truly need – that’s my expertise.

  • No. Generative AI still has the tendency to hallucinate answers: they may sound correct, but are not. Also, many concepts names in AP Human Geography are adopted from other disciplines, but modified for the discipline of geography, so I wanted to make sure my information is grounded in solid geographic sources. Additionally, my background working with hundreds of students, over thousands of hours, through tutoring has helped me understand common misconceptions. I also know how to cut through the “noise” of all the academic writing in textbooks and get to the core of what’s important in the concepts. I don’t think AI has mastered misunderstandings. The writing is my own and I’m proud of that.

  • Making great guides takes time.  I haven’t had the time to complete all the unit guides, yet…

Even without all the units, they are still worth doing.  Depth of understanding on some concepts is better than little knowledge of many.

If there’s a unit that’s especially challenging, consider one-on-one tutoring – it is a great alternative. Check out my tutoring information.
